A Transition Island - moving towards a resilient community
Having recently moved to a new community, that of Salt Spring island BC, I was thrilled to discover and consequently join, a newly formed group dedicated to initiating a Transition Network on the Island.
The Transition Movement began in the UK in 2006 and the aim of the project is to equip communities for the dual challenges of climate change and peak oil. The movement currently has member communities in a number of countries worldwide. We are lucky on Salt Spring that there is already a strong sense of community and within that, groups already committed to supporting green transport ideas, local food production and awareness of green building ideals.
As a Transition Island our group is looking to bring these groups together under one umbrella and identify new projects that will build towards a resilience towards the issues of peak oil and climate change. We will be engaging and communicating with the Salt Spring community the transition process.
I am particularly looking forward to the Salt Spring Film Festival where we will include several showings of films that clearly communicate the message of transition. The film below gives a great introduction to the movement and I look forward to blogging more about how Salt Spring Island moves towards resilience!
