About Us

Unplugged and Outdoors - giving children the chance to thrive

Picture
Our world is a complex place, full of challenges, opportunity and beauty. Children need encouragement to help them understand their surroundings and to positively engage with all that is around them. Going outside is the perfect way for children to connect with themselves and to begin to build the tools that will help them successfully navigate the world around them.  Children thrive in nature and grow their ability to collaborate, innovate, inspire, create and in turn develop their intrinsic motivation.

One of the best gifts a parent can give a child is the opportunity to develop their intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is motivation that is driven by the pleasure taken in an activity so the activity is more likely to be engaged in. This happens when we feel we have autonomy over our actions, we believe we have the skill to reach our desired goals and are interested in mastering a topic or skill.

Heading outside encourages the development of intrinsic motivation -build a sandcastle or snow fort, climb a tree, go for a nature walk, or fly a kite.

At naturebag, we have put together a range of outdoor activities, adapted for different age groups, to help build children’s intrinsic motivation, ie to building their autonomy, mastery and purpose.  We propose to help build your children’s insides, while outside, with activities that:

  • connect us with nature, ourselves and each other
  • support a healthy lifestyle and explore our own spirituality
  • are interesting and fun
  • encourage curiosity, creativity and collaboration
  • help us realize we are part of something bigger than ourselves

Early on, we were lucky enough to meet and interview Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the Woods; Saving our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder”.  In his book,  Richard Louv presents a huge amount of research and anecdotes explaining how in one generation, we have moved away from nature. This is resulting in  some of the most disturbing childhood trends, such as the rises in obesity, attention disorders, and depression.

Our aim here is to go beyond the research and offer tangible ways to reconnect with nature and give our children the “inside tools” to flourish in an increasingly electronic world.

We encourage you to spend time with your children outdoors, try the activities and write back to us about your experiences.

Together, we will build a better world.
